Sometimes when you need to lug groceries you are either walking to the grocery store from the RV park without a vehicle, or you are just picking up things like ice or water from the RV office and need to take it back to your site, but all without using a vehicle.
While I do try and use re-usable bags when I can, there are sometimes I either don’t have any with me (how many times have we forgotten them in the kitchen and they never make it to the RV!) or they are being repurposed for something else in the RV, such as holding odds and ends that don’t currently have a home in the RV. And sometimes they just get gross and dirty, and the thought of putting a bag of ice in a dirty reusable grocery bag kind of creeps me out – yes, I have that ick factor on some things like that.
The problem with plastic grocery bags is that while I can carry the weight, plastic bag handles definitely aren’t designed for comfort and the pain is from the plastic digging into my hands rather than trouble with the weight specifically. But some companies have come out with some solutions to this problem, and here are the two I have tried personally.
These ones feel the most secure to me, since they are metal and not plastic. And you can fit quite a few bags on each of these. I do find it a bit easier to have the bags sitting in the cart or the floor and then attach the clip through the handles. It can sometimes be awkward to add bags while holding it in the air, after you add the first bag. And sometimes I do like to load these up! And it doesn’t have to be plastic grocery bags, you can use this with reusable shopping bags and other types of shopping bags too.
The handles are covered with a foam cushion so they don’t bother my hands. I try and distribute the bags along it, if I am adding more than one.
This is the other style I have used.
These are a bit more awkward to use if you want to put more than one bag on them. I don’t use them when I am carrying super heavy items, since I am a bit concerned as they are made out of plastic. But you don’t have to worry about accidentally pinching a finger as with the carabiner style.
Keep both styles near the RV door so you don’t forget to grab one or if you use the carabiner one, I clip it right to the reusable bag handle, so I can have it ready when doing a big shop that requires walking back from the grocery store.
- The easiest to use; and most comfort ergonomic grocery bag handle.
Oh, and if you are repurposing those plastic grocery bags as garbage bags, we have some great tips here!
