Camping supplies often need assembly with hex keys because often times someone might not have a screwdriver to set something up, and hex keys are cheap to include with parts for assembly. But those hex keys are easily lost, especially if you need it again to disassemble to fit back in the RV.
You can pickup hex key sets – which come in a set looking like a Swiss army knife holding different sizes – at hardware stores, but they aren’t exactly a budget “nice to have” item unless you have money to spare. But my local dollar store had a set of hex keys for only $1.
Another nice thing about these types of sets, is that they are a bit more substantial to hold onto if you are needing to do a lot of turning with a hex key. If you have ever assembled anything with a smaller hex key, you know how much your hand can hurt after repeatedly pressing and turning a tiny piece of metal!
Hex key sets don’t seem to be a standard offering at the dollar store, so it might be something you have to watch for when they happen to have them in stock. But they can be a life saving item to have on hand when you need it, but can’t find the hex key that came with whatever you are trying to set up or take down.
You can buy them in packs where the hex keys are loose, but that doesn’t help the problem of losing them. I prefer the ones that are folding like this, and the main part is then used for a much more comfortable turning handle! If you can’t find them in your dollar store, this is my main set – it is two, one SAE (imperial sizing) and one metric.
– The 9 SAE key sizes included are: 5/64″; 3/32″; 7/64″; 1/8″; 9/64″; 5/32″; 3/16″; 7/32″ and 1/4″.
– The 8 metric metric sizes included are: 1.5mm; 2mm; 2.5mm; 3mm; 4mm; 5mm; 6mm and 8mm.
- Durable composite construction
