If you bought your RV new, you probably got a sample or two of Porta-Pak, a product that is designed to help deodorize and/or break down the waste in your black tank. You probably tossed it in the first time you used it, then either promptly forgot about it, or grew paranoid when you didn’t have another one to pop in the next time.
There are also some other types that do the same thing, but in a liquid form, which means measuring and pouring – I don’t know about you, but the less amount fo time I have to spend dealing with black tanks – especially anything messy – the better!
So what to Porta-Paks do, and do you really need to use them?
Porta-Paks have two main functions – to deodorize and to help break down waste and toilet paper in the black tank. Do you NEED to use them? Not for the most part. Is it NICE to use them? You bet!
First, if the weather is super hot, it is just par for the course that many RVs will start to notice some smell from the black tank. Porta-Paks help to counteract that smell, so it becomes much less noticeable or even non-existant. If you are travelling in a smaller RV, especially with more people, it can also be nice because of the whole confined spaces thing, especially if the black tank is getting full.
They come in packs of 10 and 50.

Reminder, you don’t have to use Porta-Paks or Bio-Paks. Your RV holding tank will work fine. But if you are noticing the smells from the tank, especially if you have a sensitive nose, then it would probably be money well spent to try these out.
